Ankylosing Spondylitis

Keep your spine mobile and inflammation controlled with structured, personalized care.

What is Ankylosing Spondylitis?

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory arthritis that mainly affects the spine and sacroiliac joints, causing back pain and stiffness that is typically worse with rest and better with movement. It usually begins before the age of 45.

Without consistent management, chronic inflammation can gradually reduce spinal flexibility. With early diagnosis, regular movement and modern care, most people maintain active, productive lives.

Common Symptoms

Chronic lower back pain lasting over 3 months
Stiffness worst in the early morning or after rest
Pain that improves with activity, not rest
Buttock pain alternating sides
Fatigue during flares
Reduced spinal flexibility over time
Heel or chest-wall pain in some patients
Eye redness or pain (uveitis) in some patients

Causes & Risk Factors

AS has a strong genetic link — most patients carry the HLA-B27 gene — but genes alone are not enough. Gut inflammation, infections and lifestyle factors appear to influence disease onset and activity. Men are affected more often, and symptoms typically start in the late teens to thirties.

How The Cure Cabin Helps

Our plans pair your rheumatology treatment with structured mobility work, anti-inflammatory nutrition, gut health support and sleep and stress management. Consistency is everything in AS — we provide the follow-up and accountability that make it sustainable.

This page is for education, not diagnosis. Symptoms overlap between conditions — a proper medical evaluation is always the first step.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ankylosing spondylitis just back pain?
No. AS is inflammatory arthritis. Unlike mechanical back pain, it is worse with rest, improves with movement, and needs specific long-term management.
Will I develop a fused spine?
Most patients who are diagnosed early and stay consistent with treatment and exercise maintain good spinal mobility. Severe fusion is far less common with modern care.
What exercise is safe with AS?
Movement is medicine in AS. Stretching, swimming, walking and guided strength work are usually encouraged — your plan is tailored to your disease activity.
