Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis)

Break the itch–scratch cycle with barrier repair, trigger control and whole-person care.

What is Eczema?

Eczema (atopic dermatitis) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition causing dry, intensely itchy, inflamed patches. It stems from a weakened skin barrier plus an over-reactive immune system, and it often runs alongside asthma and allergic rhinitis.

Eczema flares and settles in cycles. Good care shortens flares and — crucially — lengthens the calm periods, through daily barrier repair, trigger identification and inflammation control.

Common Symptoms

Intense itching, often worse at night
Dry, sensitive, easily irritated skin
Red or darkened inflamed patches
Thickened, leathery skin from chronic scratching
Small bumps that may weep when scratched
Common at elbow creases, behind knees, neck, hands
Flares with weather change, sweat, stress, irritants
Family history of eczema, asthma or allergies

Causes & Risk Factors

Eczema combines a genetically weaker skin barrier (often filaggrin-related) with immune over-reactivity. Triggers include harsh soaps and detergents, sweat, dust mites, weather shifts, stress, certain fabrics and, in some children, specific foods. The itch–scratch cycle then perpetuates the damage.

How The Cure Cabin Helps

We build a complete routine: daily barrier repair with the right moisturizers, correct use of anti-inflammatory treatment during flares, systematic trigger identification (rather than random food-banning), and support for sleep and stress — because scratching at night undoes daytime care.

This page is for education, not diagnosis. Symptoms overlap between conditions — a proper medical evaluation is always the first step.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is eczema caused by food allergy?
Usually not in adults. In some infants and young children specific foods contribute, and testing may be worthwhile. Blanket food elimination without evidence often harms nutrition without helping skin.
Are steroid creams safe?
Used correctly — the right strength, the right site, for the right duration under medical guidance — topical steroids are safe and effective. Fear-driven undertreatment is a leading cause of uncontrolled eczema.
Why does my eczema come back when I stop moisturizing?
Barrier repair is the foundation of eczema care, not an optional extra. The barrier defect is ongoing, so daily moisturizing continues even when skin looks clear.
